(Which I speculate is the primary reason it's DLC lifecycle was not prolonged.) This is entirely anecdotal, but playing the vanilla game I've basically never ran into an issue, and a lot of the issues appear tied to the DLC and start dates related to them.

(I prefer Records because the Romance balance is too dependent on the generals.) Some people disregard Records mode because the generals in it don't have rally or other abilities like the generals in Romance mode, but in my opinion either mode is fine, it just depends on what you want from battles. While there have been complaints about the battles, I think the closest we've gotten to a consensus is that the final patches did good work in terms of gameplay balance, so the only concern left is in regards to the troops all being similar to one another as in Shogun 2. (You can literally purchase territory and then assault or vassalise the capital.) If you want to play 90% of the game without battling, you can. If you want to play as a bandit leader or errant group of soldiers, you can. The campaign is absolutely phenomenal and the potential to roleplay is immense. It's got weather, it's got fire, it's got an AI that gives the impression of having some kind of strategy in a given battle.

If you liked Shogun 2 for being extremely well-made, in exchange for lacking faction variety, 3K is the obvious game in the series for you. With each game in the series it becomes more obvious that the current/Warhammer devs don't necessarily understand or care why the historical games were fun, even though the games are still half-built around things like morale and positioning. I have fun because I'm always playing a new faction and fighting battles in two dozen different matchups. I had a lot of fun with Total Warhammer 1/2 but I have to admit that I'm a sucker for variety. Diplomacy actually matters and can form campaign-long narratives, while campaign structure manages to ramp up the opposition in an organic-feeling way when the player starts to hit the boring success stage. You can tell that people thought about why to add something to game.įire physics, for example, are inherently fun and offer a lot of tactical variety without ever ruining game balance or forcing tedious repetition. It clearly went through a sufficiently long development process in which devs could test if something was fun, adjust, and test again. The game is billed as a “historical strategy game,” so expect a healthy dose of lore to accompany any footage of the game over the next year.3K is a rare delight: A Total War game that is well made.
